Beaumont, population 118,296, is a suburban community in Jefferson County, east of Houston, Texas. It sits within the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is the 24th most populous city in the state. With the 1901 establishment of the Spindletop salt dome oil field, Beaumont became one of the major petro-chemical refining areas in the United States of America. Beaumont joins Port Arthur and Orange to form the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Gulf Coast. Gulf Oil and Texaco were formed in Beaumont.
Lamar University, located in Beaumont and conferring bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, is classified as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Lamar University has about 15,000 students.
