Jasper, the “Butterfly Capital of Texas”, has a population of about 8,500 people, and is the county seat of Jasper County. The weekly newspaper, The Jasper Newsboy, is the longest running weekly newspaper in the state of Texas, having been continuously published since 1865. This paper covers everything from local opinion (“Remember the Sausage-Making Days”), Jasper County Most Wanted for the Week (“Michael Caleb Wells, 21, of Newton. Charge: manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.”), and local, statewide and international news (“Fired barber shop worker pleads guilty in boss’ death”).
According to the City of Jasper, Texas website, “Mild winters, low cost of living, high quality of life, and abundant natural beauty make Jasper a great place to put down roots.”
The Sam Rayburn Reservoir, about nine miles north of Jasper, is a popular tourist destination, visited by thousands of vacationers a year.
The City of Jasper Municipal Court is located in the Police Department building at 555 South Main Street.
