The City of Texas City, Texas is located in Galveston County, on the southwest shoreline of Galveston Bay. Texas City has a population of 45,099, making it the fourth largest city in Galveston County. On April 16, 1947, a mid-morning fire on board the SS Grandcamp, which was docked in the Texas City port, detonated 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate, pretty much destroying the whole city. This became known as the Texas City Disaster.
